Khan Academy

If you want to do some learning during quarantine, KhanAcademy.org is a free resource and non-profit that I used both in high school and college. They have a website and app for elementary through college level content, and a separate app for younger kids as well! I still use the site today to learn new things.

Memrise

Memrise is another of my favorite language learning apps. Also not a non-profit, they have a paid membership that unlocks more content, but the core content is available for free. I use Memrise to supplement my language learning on Duolingo, and found their visual memorization techniques super helpful in learning Chinese characters and the Cyrillic alphabet.

Musopen

Musopen.org is a non-profit that provides a compendium of music and music resources for learning. When I first started doing web design, I used some of the public domain music tracks to add a musical theme to one of my first websites, before that practice fell out of fashion. I also discovered Debussy and used some of his pieces for a space themed video about foxes landing on the moon. I had quite the imagination.

Audible

Audible.com offers audiobooks for sale alongside memberships that provide credits that may be exchanged for audiobooks in lieu of outright purchases. With schools closing, Audible is offering Audible Stories with a selection of hundreds of free to stream audiobooks for children, and with classics that may appeal to adults as well.

Passion City Online

If you’re looking for the Good News, you may have a church that’s already online or you may be looking for one. If you’re in the latter group, Louie Giglio, founder of the international Passion Movement and pastor of Passion City church in Atlanta, Georgia is offering online only church services at a dedicated website, grappling with questions such as “Where is God?”

Doctor Mike

If you have medical concerns, it’s important to consult with a qualified physician. Doctor Mike Varshavski, known on YouTube as Doctor Mike, isn’t a substitute for a trip to the doctor, but he is a wealth of information and provides a positive outlook. His YouTube channel contains topical Q&As and other medical related content, such as the fun Real Doctor VS Kids Health Quiz.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a free, educational resource beginners, part of the Code with Google program. It works by using a variety of practical scenarios to teach code. It’s available by app on Android and iOS, and also on their website.

Duolingo

Duolingo is one of my favorite language learning apps. It’s not a non-profit, so they do offer a paid subscription, but the content is all available for free. I’m learning about 12 languages right now, and it’s a lot of fun!

Smashwords

If you have a story that you’d like to publish, Smashwords.com is a great place to start, whether you’re a beginner or a word processing master. There’s a free Smashwords Style Guide by the founder of the site that provides groundwork for the proper formatting of an eBook.

Humble Bundle

I initially thought this was a scam, because it seemed too good to be true. I found out about the service after Nintendo hosted a bundle with them. Humble Bundle provides game, software, and book bundles in a pay-what-you-want format, as well as a gaming subscription that lets you pick a number of games each month. They also give to a variety of charities with bundles. It’s been a more economical way to build up my game collection than individual purchases.

Motley Fool

MotleyFool.com is home to stock market articles and subscription services (this is not an endorsement of the services. Consult with a qualified financial advisor if you have any questions). New to the site is a dedicated coronavirus page with free updates and editor’s picks with articles on navigating the markets during these more volatile trading sessions. There’s more information for Premium subscribers, but many informational articles are free. If you want to learn more fundamentals than what’s provided there, KhanAcademy.org has finance education content that covers stocks, options, bonds and more.

Duolingo Events

The previously noted Duolingo also has an offshoot Duolingo Events program that ordinarily offers in person language groups for learners of varied backgrounds and experiences. It’s been a tremendous volunteer efforts that has been helpful to learners all across the globe, and it’s going online. Many language groups are available at the Duolingo Events website.

The Trade Desk

Known in the business world for their advertising bid platform, The Trade Desk also offers The Edge Academy, with online course content to help marketers hone their skills in the new data driven economy. The Trade Desk has opened up The Edge Academy for free throughout the remainder of the this year, 2020.

Swift Playgrounds

Swift Playgrounds is Apple’s free, educational coding resource for beginners. It uses a gamified approach to learning that is accessible to kids and adults alike. The application is available for iOS and macOS.

Cupcake Jemma

Contributor, L.B.

“She started her own business in the U.K., Crumbs and Doilies. Lots of amazing and unique baking recipes. She’s had stuff I’ve never heard before. My pastry chef friend in New York didn’t even know about one of them. She’s one of my favorites to watch for baked goods.”
